Karlie Solum Explores Generational Farming and Community Leadership with Drew Peterson

Having open conversations about food and farming with South Dakotans and the farmers who grow it is what we do. In fact, that’s what Hungry for Truth is all about. We had an exciting opportunity to connect Marsch McClennan’s Director of Community Relations, Karlie Solum, with Drew Peterson, a 5th-generation farmer from Salem, SD, to chat about agricultural technology, Drew & Karlie’s passion for community involvement, and the importance of championing South Dakota’s agriculture industry. Below, Karlie shares her learnings from her visit to Drew’s farm.

When approached with the opportunity to promote rural agriculture through the Hungry for Truth campaign, I was thrilled to be able to learn more and share my deep appreciation for the farming community so near and dear to our state. I had the opportunity to spend the day with Drew Peterson, a dedicated board member of the South Dakota Soybean Association and a passionate farmer just north of Salem, SD. It was a day filled with learning, laughter, and a whole lot of appreciation for the hard work that goes into feeding our communities and the world.

As I arrived at Drew’s farm, I was warmly welcomed by him, his dad Steve, his wife Lauren, and their adorable son Michael (and another on the way!).. Like many of our South Dakota farm families, Drew is a fifth-generation farmer, and it was wonderful to see his family so deeply rooted in agriculture, with all hands on deck.

Our first stop was the calving barn, where Drew shared fascinating insights about their calving operation. I was lucky enough to see two brand-new twins that had just been born! The mom had some complications, and Drew was quick to the rescue to make sure the calves had the nutrition they needed to thrive. It was a reminder of the hard work and dedication that goes into raising livestock and the joy that comes with new beginnings on the farm, and it definitely made me appreciate the work that farmers do each and every day!

Next, we headed out to some pasture ground. As we walked through the field, Drew and I dove into a conversation about his involvement in various community and statewide organizations. From the South Dakota Legislature to the South Dakota Agriculture Foundation, Drew is a true champion for agriculture, and it was inspiring to hear about the initiatives he’s part of that are making a real difference.

As someone who is also passionate about getting younger generation leaders involved in crucial issues in our state, I couldn’t help but admire Drew as a fellow professional stepping up to take part in these conversations. The future of farming, along with many crucial parts of our economy and way of life, relies on our engagement and advocacy. I am certainly inspired by Drew and thankful he has taken the leap to be engaged to benefit us all.

The final part of the day was spent doing field work, preparing for planting. The technology and machinery used today are a marvel and have certainly transformed farming efficiency. He was even able to put the tractor in self-driving mode and listen to Bluetooth! The countless hours of planning, prepping, and hard work that go into each planting season are often underappreciated. It is all hands on deck from tilling, planting, and even Lauren juggling schedules between their son, working, and helping with meals. She is a true gem!

As I wrapped up my day with Drew, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the hard work of farmers like him and the entire agricultural community. They are the backbone of our region, and their dedication ensures that we all have access to the food we need and strong economies.

A huge thank you to Drew, his family, and all the farmers out there who work tirelessly in the agricultural world. Your efforts are truly appreciated, and I’m proud to be part of a state that values the great way of life we have here in South Dakota.
