From bulls and cows to feedlots and branding, there are many key terms to know. In this guide, we'll provide a Beef Cattle 101 terminology overview to help you better communicate with other farmers, veterinarians, and buyers. Whether you're a seasoned beef cattle farmer or just getting started, this guide will help you speak the language of the industry.

Bovine: Refers to any animal belonging to the family Bovidae, which includes cattle, bison, buffalo, and antelopes. The term is commonly used to describe domesticated cattle, which are raised for meat, milk, and other products. Bovines are herbivorous and have a four-chambered stomach that allows them to digest tough plant materials such as grasses.

Bull: A male bovine that is kept for breeding purposes. Bulls are typically larger and more muscular than cows and have more prominent necks and shoulders.

Cow: A female bovine that has given birth to at least one calf.

Heifer: A young female bovine that has not yet given birth to a calf.

Calf: A young bovine that is less than one year old.

Steer: A male bovine that has been castrated before sexual maturity. Steers are commonly used for beef production because they tend to grow larger and put on weight more efficiently than intact males.

Calving: The process of giving birth to a calf.

Weaning: The process of separating a calf from its mother to encourage it to begin eating solid food and to become less dependent on its mother's milk.

Castration: The process of removing the testicles from a male bovine to prevent it from breeding.

Branding: The process of marking cattle with a unique symbol or design to identify them as belonging to a particular ranch or farm.

Ear-tagging: The process of attaching a unique identification tag to a cow's ear to help identify it.
