Summer Slushies

Summer Slushies

It’s a long, hot summer, and we have the perfect way to cool down. Take a break from the sunshine, and enjoy this cold, fruit-flavored treat.

Have you ever seen seedless watermelons at the grocery and wondered how they came to be? It’s a common misconception that seedless watermelons are a GMO fruit, when actually they are created by cross-breeding watermelons with different traits. There is no genetic modification involved.

Only eight GMO crops are currently commercially available in the United States: alfalfa, canola, corn, cotton, papaya, soybeans, squash and sugar beets. Of those, papaya and squash are the only two whole foods you’ll find in the store today. The others are available as ingredients in packaged foods. GMO or non-GMO, you can rest assured that the food on those shelves is equally healthy and nutritious.

Cheers to summer and a convenient slushie recipe to cool down. This recipe is courtesy of Hy-Vee. Find more recipes at hy-vee.com.
